Early in the year of 2003, Ms Mannile organised students to create several new garden plots. In the upper courtyard, bricks were removed from around the trees and these were changed into colourful beds of annuals and bulbs. This environmentally-minded teacher also planted out the two beds next to the Sports Store room and another near to the Staffroom. These plants included ferns and natives.

In June, 2003, an Environment Committee was formed by the Mrs Dixon and further improvements to the school gardens were discussed. On the National School Tree Planting Day, (Planet Ark), the Student Councillors from each class planted native trees, supplied by our local council. At our Fete, students purchased native plants which have been put into some of the gardens. These plants have since been nurtured by the Gardaroos and other students. Green Tree Guards can be seen in the photo to protect the plants until they become established.

Our school was invited to enter the Orange Blossom Festival Garden Competition and we entered in two categories. As a result we earned second place in the Environmental Awareness section and won the Best Garden maintained by Primary School Students. Students representing the Gardaroos and Student Councillors were accompanied by Mrs Bell and Mrs Coe.
