Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier
by Zac K. - Year 6
I visited the War Memorial on the 27th March 2008. On that day, we witnessed the sight of a true hero, in an amazing place. This place was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
As I walked up the smooth paved stairs, I saw a room full of darkness, sadness and despair. In the middle of the room was a beautifully placed tomb with gold letters imprinted on it. The letters read “ An Unknown Australian Soldier who died in the War of 1914-1918.”
The thoughts that ran through my mind, the gunfire, the harsh environments and most of all, the thought of your own blood being shed over the historic battlegrounds. The pain, the suffering and the loneliness of this war was something these men did for our country and us.
Each time I took a step around the amazing room, I felt a click, like the sort of feeling you get when you know someone really well but at the same time, you don’t know them at all. I felt like I could engage with him, like he was a friend.
I imagined this unknown soldier fighting for our lives, thinking of his family and friends. He had a gun and he stormed the battlefield shooting down anyone who got in his way. He was a true soldier, a soldier who cared.
I hope that now-a-days and in the future there could be peace all over the world and that the brutal war in
Iraq, with all the men and women who have devoted and lost their lives, can finally come to an end.
