Year 3 Kurnell Excursion
On Wednesday, 17 th August, all Year 3 students went on an excursion to Kurnell, Botany Bay. It was a great day. After a long bus ride we arrived and broke up into three groups. We walked down to the waterfront and stood on the spot where Captain James Cook and his crew first stepped onto Australian soil. We dressed up as the various characters and acted out the scene.
Then we went on a short bushwalk and found some of the plants that would have been there when the Europeans first arrived. We tasted some leaves from the sarsaparilla vine
Next we went into the education centre and saw a replica of the Endeavour. We also saw a huge mural of what Botany Bay would have looked like when Captain Cook arrived. We also learnt about how the local Aboriginal people would have been living at that time and the affect on them of the arrival of the Europeans.
We arrived back at school just as the home bell rang. We had had a wonderful day and learnt a lot about those first European explorers who discovered the east coast of Australia.
