PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
The end of this term has again come quickly and I am sure all our students, staff and parents are ready for a well earned rest. The students have worked very hard throughout the term and their achievements have been remarkable. Their positive attitude towards their work, the wonderful way in which they wear their uniform and the genuine care they show each other are clear indicators of the pride they feel in being valued members of the Samuel Gilbert Public School family.
Band Achievements:
Our three bands all achieved wonderful results at the recent Yamaha Music Festival. Our Training Band achieved Gold, our Concert Band received Gold and our Performance Band gained Silver. These three awards are great recognition of the skills of our students and acknowledge the improvement that was particularly evident at the recent Band Camp Concert. Congratulations to all members of our band program and particularly to our wonderful band committee members and our two very talented band conductors, Mr Mark Strykowski and Mr John D’Arcy. A great team effort!
School resumes for staff only on Monday, 16th July and all students return on Tuesday, 17th July. I hope that everyone has a safe and very relaxing holiday.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Whole School Photo
Due to poor weather conditions we had to cancel the Whole School Photo on Wednesday. The photo has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 18th July (first Wednesday back in Term 3) for 9.00am. Students are asked to move to the photo shoot straight from assembly so it is very important they are at school on time. Students need to wear full school winter uniform.

DIGITAL ART COMPETITION
Here's an exciting Digital Art Competition co-sponsored by Wacom Australia and Scholastic Media & Technology. The "Living in Australia Primary Schools Digital Art Competition" celebrates the diversity of people, cultures, and artistic expression in Australia, and explores what it means to live in Australia. Although students are free to be creative, submissions to this contest should depict a scene that expresses the theme "Living in Australia".
Students can create their own digital artworks at home using any drawing or paint program. If needed, you can download a free drawing program called ‘Tux Paint’ from the Internet. It has a great tool called ‘smudge’ (found in the ‘magic’ section) that allows you to mix paint colours together.
Please note all artwork must be produced by the children with no help from others. The school reserves the right to refuse submissions where help has been given. Digital artworks should be burned to CD and given to Mrs Elizabeth Evans (KE) after the holidays. Please label the CD with your child’s full name and class.
Visit the Wacom website for more details:

SCIENCE ENRICHMENT UPDATE
During Semester 1 there have been trial programs operating from the Science room. These include Science Clubs for Stage 2, lunchtime Science sessions for Stage 1 and Murder under the Microscope for Stage 3 students.
Thursday afternoon groups were studying ecology and some basic electronics and will continue during Term 3 for interested Stage 3 students. These have been mentoring programs designed to extend students.
Stage 1 opportunities have been limited due to the amount of available time to operate. Children have discussed issues such as global warming (Ice Age 2) and conservation issues such as ‘whaling’ and animals in captivity (Free Willy).
Murder under the Microscope was quite popular although not long enough for us all to get into! Organisers will look at extending time frames for participation in the future. It is an interactive internet ‘game’ with life like sceneries to solve environmental problems in catchment areas. Another student initiated project that will continue next semester is the Science magazine. It has articles submitted by students for their interests and will improve as they get better at layout and publishing techniques.
An Astronomy night is planned for Science Week in August and will also highlight some of the Y5/6 assignments about ‘Space’. Entry will be by ticket ONLY for security and catering reasons and is to be for Stage 3 students interested in coming along with or without telescopes.
Thank you to Mrs Stosic and Mrs Ramsome for your input and enthusiasm as well as to our wonderful P&C parents who support our many activities and endeavours.

BAND REPORT
All 3 bands competed in the Yamaha Music Festival during last wee and over last weekend. We have very exciting news regarding our fantastic results.
Training Band – GOLD
Concert Band – GOLD
Performance Band – SILVER
Well done all 3 bands!
Special thanks must be made to the parents who drove their children to Chatswood on Sunday and an extra special mention to those children who made a particular choice to support the band even though they had sporting commitments on as well.
Enjoy your holidays and maybe even play your instrument! We have another busy program planned for Term 3.
