PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Excursions:
It has been a very busy time for off-school learning activities with the Band Camp held at Vision Valley last week, our Year 5 excursion to Lake Burrendong this week as well as the Year 2 day excursion to Longneck Lagoon on Wednesday.

It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and skills displayed by all our students at the Band Camp as they worked hard under the careful guidance of our Band Committee and our two Bandmasters. Their improvement was remarkable and at the concert on the final evening it was applause all round for the students in each of our three bands. It was extremely pleasing to hear the very positive comments made by the camp staff on the behaviour and cooperation of all our students.

It is also timely to thank all the teachers, band committee members and our bandmasters for all the time and effort that they put into our band students. It is truly appreciated!

Year 5 Camp:
Feedback from the Year 5 camp indicates that everyone is having a great time and there was huge excitement as gold (even if they were specks) was discovered while our students were panning at Hill End. It augurs well for some wonderful stories when they return home on Friday evening.

School Photos:
A quick reminder that School Photo day is next Tuesday, 5th June and payment for the photos should be returned to school on Tuesday in the envelope supplied, except for the family photo envelopes which need to be returned by Friday, 1st June. Please refer to the information sheet which was sent home last Friday and contact the school office if you require any further information. Please pay particular attention to the uniform requirements for that day.

Stranger Danger:
This is an important reminder to parents to keep talking to your children about safety on the way to and from school and in fact, whenever they are moving around the community. Our Regional office has informed us that there has been a man in a white Tarago Van stalking playgrounds and watching children in the Hornsby area. There was also an attempted abduction of an 11 year old boy at Killara. Teachers will also reinforce the stranger/danger message with all students this week.

School Security Gates:
Recently a number of people not from the school have been entering the school in Ridgecrop Drive and exiting in Gilbert Road near the Kindergarten rooms.  I want to inform parents that from next week and until the end of this term the Gilbert Road gates will be closed at around 9.45am until lunchtime each day. They will also be closed in the afternoons at 4.30pm. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but it is implemented in the interests of student safety. I will review the situation at the end of this term.

Vehicle movement around the school:
A further reminder to parents to obey all the rules relating to the movement of vehicles around the school particularly in the School Zone hours of 8.00-9.30am and 2.30pm-4.00pm. These are the times that school children are most likely to be on the move and drivers should exercise extreme caution at all times. Fines for disobeying parking signs or speed limits are very significant. Please do the right thing!

Baulkham Hills Council have sent us some material to inform and remind parents about School Zones and I have sent these home with this newsletter to every family.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Carpet Squares
A request for carpet squares for our students to sit on at lunchtime, so that they were not on the concrete, was made to our school community.

As a result of this request a parent, Mr David Hadeed, has supplied the school with numerous carpet squares for our students.  We would like to thank Mr Hadeed for his generous support.

If you are requiring new carpet at home David Hadeed at Solomon’s Flooring at Willoughby (9958 2111) will be happy to assist.

The school still needs more carpet squares (edged carpet mats from sample books is best) so we would be grateful for any contributions.

P&C REPORT
It’s time to have a say! – The school uniform is under review.

Since late last year a committee has been considering issues raised by parents and teachers about the uniform and locating uniform options for the school community to view and comment on.

Those items are now available and it’s time for the school community to express their views.

Next week (Week 7) the students from Years 2 to 6 will view the uniform options and provide feedback to the Student Council representatives.

In the following 2 weeks (Weeks 8 & 9) it is the parents’ opportunity to provide their views about the uniform options.  Late in Week 7 a survey will be sent home for completion.  The survey contains descriptions about each of the uniform options and parents will be asked to tick a box to elect their preferred option.  We would recommend that you take the opportunity to view the clothes before completing the survey.

To assist parents the uniform items will be on display every day in Week 8 and 9 from –

  • 8.30am to 9.30am outside the school office
  • 2.30pm to 3.30pm outside the school office
  • 3.30pm to 6.00pm at After School Care.

Parents who cannot view the clothes at these times can look at photos and descriptions on the school website  -
www.samuelgilb-p.schools.nsw.edu.au

Those parents who would prefer to look at the items but cannot make the times outlined above can ring the school and a time to view them will be arranged.

We would encourage all parents and teachers to complete the survey whether you feel the uniform should remain relatively unchanged or changes need to occur.

The committee required a majority of views to ensure the uniform reflects the needs of the general school community.

FROM THE CANTEEN
Thank you to all our volunteers who gave up their time to help a few hours a week/month in the canteen recently.   We cannot operate without your help!

There will be a SPECIAL FOOD DAY in the last week of Term 2.  Keep an eye out for a note regarding the Special Food Day which will be issued in the next few weeks.

Sushi can still be ordered for Wednesday, 13th June (after the June long weekend).  Just ensure all orders are placed in the Canteen baskets on Tuesday morning so you don’t miss out.

Don’t forget our IGA Shopper Number (3058).  If you place your points towards the Canteen number we can use the voucher towards the purchasing of fresh fruit and vegetables for the children’s lunches.

SCHOOL BANKING
We are seeking the assistance of another parent to help with the School Banking on a Monday.   All you require is a sense of humour and to be available from 9.00 to 10.30am on a Monday.

Once the simple training is complete, we are hoping to divide the team so that only 2 people are required fortnightly.

If you are interested, please come to the Staffroom on Monday morning to meet the team.
Julianne Freeman, School Banking Coordinator

BAND REPORT
Our bands are now entering the time of the year when they are performing to the school community and competing in eisteddfods later in the term.  We heard a great performance by our Performance Band at Grandparents’ Day and then by the Concert Band at Education Week open day.  It is lovely to hear how fantastic the bands are sounding!

Last week all 3 bands had a wonderful camp at Vision Valley.  Thank you to the parents who transported instruments and stands to and from the camp.  Thank you also to our 2 bandmasters and the 6 teachers who attended camp and made it such a positive and happy experience for all the children.

Our finishing concert on Thursday night showcased the wonderful talents of our musicians for an enthusiastic audience of parents and siblings.

P&C MOTHER’S DAY STALL
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support of this year’s Mother’s Day Stall.  It was a great success and we managed to raise over $2,200.

The children really enjoyed having the chance to independently buy something which they thought was special for their mums and hopefully all our Samuel Gilbert mums were pleased with the surprises which had been so lovingly selected.

A special thank you to all the mums who helped either in the making or selling, your assistance was really appreciated.  So thank you to Christine, Kristen, Donna, Sue, Nicole, Cheryl, Kim, Janelle, Catherine, Nicole, Stephanie, Denise, Melissa and Annabelle.  Also to the mother who did not wish to be named, your last minute donations were very greatfully received so thank you for the time and effort you put into making them.
Judy Naudi, Mother’s Day Stall Coordinator
