PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Zone Cross Country:  Congratulations to all our students who ran in the Zone Cross Country events at Castle Hill Showground on Wednesday. It was a great day and as always our students were great representatives for both our school and the Castle Hill Zone. A special mention goes to Liam who ran and made it through to represent Sydney West Area at the State Carnival later in the year. Well done to all our runners!

I would also like to particularly thank Jo Fudger and all those parents who helped run the canteen and sausage sizzle at the carnival for the day. It was a fantastic effort by everyone involved and all these parents (some of whom did not have children running) gave up their time to raise considerable funds for the school.  As a P&C activity these funds will be of benefit to every student in the school. We are indeed fortunate to have parents who do so much for the school in so many varied ways and whose efforts continue to improve the learning environment for all our students. If you would like to be involved please feel free to come along to our P&C meetings held in the staff room at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of every month. You will be most welcome!

School Supervision:  I am concerned at the number of students who are being dropped off at school very early and are waiting in the school courtyard until school begins. Teacher supervision does not begin until 8.25am and some students are arriving soon after 7.30am and are sitting on the cold concrete, often in wet weather for a considerable period of time. Please do not send your children to school or allow them to leave for school until about 8.15am unless they are attending band practice.

My second request is to that other group of students who continually arrive late. School begins at 8.50am with the assembly and it is very important that students are here in plenty of time to attend the assembly, hear the messages for the day and then to move off to class with their teachers. Students who arrive late often miss the first part of the lesson and disrupt the learning of others. Please ensure that students arrive at school on time to attend the assembly at 8.50am. Your cooperation in both these matters will be greatly appreciated.

Student Reports: The Semester 1 reports are nearing completion and it is the school’s intention to send them home with students in an addressed envelope next Thursday, 21st June. Please look out for the reports when they come home and take the time to read them. If you have any concerns you are welcome to make a time to discuss them with the class teacher.

Chocolate Drive: An urgent request to return outstanding money for the chocolate drive so that the fundraiser can be finalised. At this stage there 106 families with money outstanding representing an amount of around $5000. We absolutely need you to return the money by next Tuesday, 19th June. Remember the funds raised benefit all our students!

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
English Competition:
The English Competition will be held this Tuesday 19th June. Year 3 students will complete the test in 4/5D room supervised by Mrs Evans, Year 4 students will be in 5PS room supervised by Mr Crossman, Year 5 students in 5C room supervised by Mrs Martin and Year 6 students in 6H supervised by Mrs Hart.

Students are to meet Mrs Martin on the steps outside 6H room at 2:55pm. Students need to bring afternoon tea, 2 x 2B pencils, a rubber and a book to read.

Year 3 and 4 students will complete the test at 4:15pm and Years 5 and 6 at 4:30pm. Please be mindful when collecting students in Years 3 & 4 that senior students will still be completing their test.

Whole School Photo:  A whole school photo will be taken on Wednesday 27th June at 9:00am. Students will be asked to move to the photo shoot straight from assembly so it is very important they are at school on time. Students need to wear full school winter uniform.

The Hills District Public Speaking Competition:
This commences next week with the topics being given to the students so that they can start researching and working on their speeches at school during Weeks 9 and 10 and over the holidays.  In Weeks 2 and 3 next term, classes will have a “play-off” with the winners presenting their speeches to their grade in Weeks 4 and 5.

Support Program:
Programs provided by Mrs Eldridge

One of the goals at Samuel Gilbert is to maximise students learning opportunities. Teachers were asked to identify students who may need additional support to assist them attain expected learning outcomes. Our support teacher, Mrs Eldridge, provides several programs which complement classroom learning experiences for students from K–6. In grades 3-6 reading has been targeted as an area of need hence each grade receives three, 40 minutes sessions of support per week. This occurs during across the grade reading group sessions. Identified students work in a small group setting using resources including SRA Specific Skills, the Rigby Reading Program and Reciprocal Teaching strategy. Kindergarten and Year 1 students who have been identified with oral language needs attend 2 weekly sessions of support. Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 with reading skills well beyond grade outcomes receive 2 weekly enrichment sessions. The Year 1 enrichment students also have opportunities to further extend their creative writing skills. Year 2 students received 3 weekly reading support sessions utilising the resource Rainbow Readers, which was specifically designed to support students who have completed Reading Recovery in Year 1.

SPORTS REPORT
Cross Country  -  Congratulations to all the children who participated in our School Cross Country team at the Zone Carnival.  Once again we were successful at being declared the champion school from the 18 schools that competed.  This is our 13th win over 14 years.  The exciting news is that we get to keep the creative brass trophy permanently which is now hanging on the wall in the hall.  As from 2007 a new trophy has been awarded and will proudly sit in our trophy cabinet in the school foyer.

Some of our students  went on to represent Castle Hill Zone at the Area Carnival last Wednesday.  All children ran really well and managed to take home a certificate for 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the team’s event.  Liam was our outstanding runner and has been selected to represent Sydney West Area at the State Carnival later in the year.  Well done to the students and congratulations to Liam.

At the Area Carnival a group of parents and ex-parents ran a canteen.  This not only provided a service for Area P.S.S.A. but allowed more funds to come into our school so that all our children benefit.  To all ladies who helped a big thank you and a special thanks to Jo Fudger for coordinating the canteen.

AREA CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
On Wednesday, 13th June Samuel Gilbert School (through Miss Elaine Cater) was given the opportunity to fundraise for our school by organising and running the canteen for the Area Cross Country Carnival with over 640 competitors alone.

I would like to give a very big thank you to the mums who gave up their free time (many did not have children in the Samuel Gilbert team) who helped run a very well stocked and efficient canteen.

Thank you also to Carolyn and Julie for ordering all of the stock and to the following mums who helped on the day –

Carole, Sue, Lyn, Sue, Trudy, Simone, Sandra, Michelle, Ingrid and Kylie.  I can’t thank you enough.  A great day was had by all!

FROM THE CANTEEN
SPECIAL FOOD DAY!
Notes have been issued for our ‘Hamburger Heaven’ food day.  All orders must be returned to the canteen no later than Friday, 22nd June.  If you need a copy of the note please come to the canteen.  Please write out orders on a lunch bag and ensure the drink choice is marked clearly.

The Special Food day will be treated as a ‘Red Food Day’ which means lollies, cakes and other special treats being sold at recess at a cost ranging from 50 cents to $1.60.

A big thank you to the following ladies for helping with the lunch orders for the Area Cross Country on Wednesday, 13th June – Wendy, Judyi, Christina, Roz, Denise and Charmian.  Your help is always greatly appreciated.

We have had several comments regarding the size and cost of the new junior pie.  This pie is 120gm and sealed in its own individual pack.  The party pie is 60gm and not sealed individually.

The new junior pie is actually twice the weight therefore twice the cost of the party pie.  Due to price increases from our suppliers on party pies we decided to try the junior pie.

Please remember that the CANTEEN will be CLOSED for recess and lunch orders on the last day of term, Friday, 29th June.

FROM THE P&C
Chocolate Drive
Thank you to all those families who have taken chocolates and returned the money.  We are trying to finalise the chocolate drive and our records show that over 100 families are yet to return the chocolate money.

Please return chocolate drive money and any unsold chocolates to the School Office by Tuesday, 19th June.  Thank you again for your support.
