PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

P&C Annual General Meeting:
Next Tuesday, the P&C will hold their Annual General Meeting.  This meeting will be preceded by a short General Meeting.

As returning officer for this AGM I ask that nominations be forwarded to me as soon as possible.  Please see attached Nomination Form.

The P&C will be electing all executive positions as well as positions on the Band and Canteen sub-committees.

Venue:              School Library
Date:                11th November, 2008
Time:                7.30pm

Band Workshop and Concert:
I had a terrific evening last Friday at the Band Concert for new members.  Thank you to the many parents and teachers who supported this wonderful evening of entertainment and to Mr S for your outstanding musical leadership of our band.

Our school band program provided a wonderful opportunity for students to become engaged in learning a musical instrument.

Year 4 Excursion to Elizabeth Farm:
Year 4 students from 4M and 4J enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Elizabeth Farm last week.

Year 3 Colonial Day:

Yesterday the students of Year 3 participated in Colonial Day activities lead by 3 visiting performers.  Students and teachers dressed up and were led through a variety of role play and story telling activities that brought to life the experiences of colonial Australia.  Students had a terrific day of learning and fun, and at one stage even I couldn’t help myself and joined in!

Annual Review:
As part of our schools annual review I am working with two P&C representatives, Mrs Kristin Parle and Mrs Pip Stosic, to develop surveys around the review areas of Literacy and Learning and other areas of school life and programs.

In a few weeks these surveys will be sent home to all families in the school.  Please look out for these surveys and return to school as soon as possible.

In conjunction with these surveys I will be holding a Parent Forum at 7.30am on Wednesday, 26th November in the School Library.

On this evening I intend to provide a brief outline of school priorities for 2009-2011 and the National Assessment Program, Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN) results, following this there will be opportunities for group discussion and feedback.

An invitation will be sent home in the near future with further details.

Student Audit:
Included in this newsletter again is a note requesting information from families who intend to or might be leaving our school at the end of 2008.  This information is vital to help us plan classes for next year.

If you have not already completed this form please forward it to the school office marked ‘confidential’ as soon as possible.

Canteen Red Food Day – Halloween Day:

A very special thank you and well done to the Canteen.  Last Friday they held a Special Food Day around Halloween.  Great effort was made to provide a huge variety of theme treats and decorating the Canteen.  This day was greatly enjoyed by all students.

Assembly Items:  Week 5 – 2V,  Week 6 – 1D

Planning for 2009:
During Term 4 there are a number of days when some teachers will be involved in numerous planning days for 2009.  In each occasion we will endeavour to employ regular casual teachers and the normal class program will continue.  I apologise for this disruption but believe the long term gains for 2009 will be of great benefit for the school.

The Teachers Federation has called a 2 hour stop work meeting in support of the wages and conditions campaign on Wednesday, 19th November.  More information will be sent home about this next week.

FROM THE RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Galston District Eisteddfod
With all results now finalised I would like to congratulate both the Vocal Ensemble and our three bands on their wonderful results. Kindergarten and Year 2 singers from the Vocal Ensemble received 1st place in their section, with the Vocal Ensemble as a whole being awarded Highly Commended. The Performance Band was placed 1st and both the Concert Band and Training Bands were Highly Commended. Congratulations to all students and conductors who shared in these sensational results.

Kindergarten Transition Program
We concluded our Transition to School program for Kindergarten last Thursday by sharing a sausage sizzle with the Kindergarten students of both 2008 and 2009. Our “picnic” in the hall was lots of fun with the Performance Band impressing parents and children alike with their wonderful repertoire. A particular thank you to our Canteen volunteers who provided tea and coffee over the three week program and to Mr Young who cooked over 200 sausages to feed the hungry masses!

A reminder for any parents with children starting Kindergarten next year that payment for our Parent Lunch on Thursday, 29th January can be made at the office.

Special Interest and Sports Photos
These photos were taken last Wednesday and we hope to have them available for viewing in the office foyer in approximately a fortnight’s time.

Special Congratulations
I have previously congratulated a number of our students who were successful in the Operation Art Competition earlier this year. We have had further advice that Crystal’s collage of Australia, selected for display in the Nagoya Exhibition, has also been chosen to feature in the 2009 P&C Federation Calendar. Congratulations Crystal, we look forward to seeing the calendar next year.

SPORTS REPORT
A group of our senior students have braved the early mornings during the last couple of weeks to try out for the Sydney West Area Waterpolo teams.  Whilst it is a new sport to most of them it is amazing to see how quickly their skills are developing.

Congratulations to the following children who will take part in a Metropolitan PSSA day at Sutherland Pool on Monday, 17th November, 2008.  Jack P, Zak, Rohhan, William , Jack B, Yvonne, Kimia, Taylor, Brody, Tegan, Megan and Dunya.

Thank you to the parents who assisted with transport to the early morning training sessions at St Mary’s.

School Sport – Years 4 to 6

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter we did not have sufficient applicants to run with the recreational sport of Ten Pin Bowling during Term 4 this year.  I was looking into another exciting opportunity for those who did show interest but I was unable to do anything this year.

Each child will take part in a rotational sport program here at school.  Many thanks to Mrs Jutta Smith for her organisation of this program.

YEAR 4 ELIZABETH FARM EXCURSION
Last Monday 4M and 4J went on an excursion to Elizabeth Farm and Hambeldon Cottage.  The children had a lovely day role playing as convicts from 1828 on John Macarthur’s farm.

The children were set tasks like baking scones, washing clothes, setting the formal dinner table and making beds.  At the cottage they saw some old machines in action.

All the children were fantastic role models for Samuel Gilbert Public School.  Well done 4M and 4J.

A big thank you to the parent/grandparent helpers on the day.
Mrs Marcolin

CANTEEN NEWS
Our new Summer Menu has been out for a few weeks now.  Please make sure you check it as there have been a few changes to some items and prices.  If you have not received a copy either come and collect one from the Canteen or it will soon be available for you to download from the schools website.

Sushi will no longer be offered as we have failed to come anywhere near the minimum number of orders needed so please remove this from your menu.

Below are a few final adjustments to the menu that for one reason or another didn’t make it into the final print –

  • Fruit slushies are $1.30 not $1.50
  • Sausage Rolls are $2.00 and will be available every day
  • Focus Playwater, raspberry or blackcurrant is $1.80

We also still have a limited number of Vegetarian Lasagnes, Twista Pastas and Pirate Cap Tortellini.  Please feel free to order these even though they are not on the menu.

Finally, I just wanted to say an enormous thank you to the parents who helped either making, preparing, decorating or selling treats for our red food day last Friday, without you all I would still be surrounded with jelly crystals and plastic bugs.  Thank you!

BAND REPORT
Congratulations to all three bands for competing so well in the Galston District Eisteddfod.  The Performance Band received a 1st Place, the Concert Band a Highly Commended and the Training Band also a Highly Commended.  Well done!

There are many exciting events happening with all our bands this term – Term 4 traditionally being the performance term – so please watch out for permission notes and return them promptly.

On Friday, 31st October the band program held their annual concert.  It was a fantastic evening which started with our family sausage sizzle and showcased all three bands.  We had an enthusiastic audience which thoroughly enjoyed the music as well as many younger students who are interested in joining the Training Band in 2009.  Please return your Application Forms to the band box in the school foyer.

There are many volunteer helpers that made this evening a huge success.  They include our Band Master, Mr S, our teachers, Ms Barclay, Mrs Elliott, Mrs Tudor and Mrs McLeod Thank you to two former students who capably cooked the barbeque, David and Richard, and committee members, Jenny McNaughton and Wendy Heinrich, who coordinated the catering.

Our Term 4 Workshop was held before the concert for the Training and Concert bands.  Many thanks to Karen, Grace and Radmila for organizing and serving the delicious afternoon tea.

On Thursday, 13th November all our bands will be involved in community performances.  It is a wonderful privilege to share our music ability with other people.  We know that the performances will bring great pleasure to the audiences and that our musicians will ably represent our school.

The Training Band and Performance Band will be playing at the Anglican Retirement Village.  Please remember to wear summer school uniform, bring your instrument and music and return your permission notes promptly.  These students will travel by bus.

The Concert Band will be playing at Karonga Special School.  These students will travel by car and we are looking for parents to help us with transport.  Summer school uniform, instrument and music and signed permission note are required.

On Saturday, 15th November the Performance Band will be participating in the annual McHappy Day.  Please assemble in the Dural McDonald’s carpark at 1.15pm with your instrument and music dressed in school summer sports uniform.  The committee will bring stands for the band members to use.  The performance will last for approximately 30 minutes.  It is a great opportunity to be involved in this annual fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House.

The Performance Band is still scheduled to play on 28th November at the School Spectacular.  Currently the plan is to take the band in by bus and possibly return by car if parents are intending to attend the performance.  Please watch out for further details.

Many of our students are currently sitting AMEB exams.  We wish them every success and look forward to hearing their results.  Please let us know via a note in the band box which exam you completed and on which instrument so we can acknowledge your achievement in the next newsletter.  Good luck and happy practicing!
Sue Lack,
Band Committee

P & C ASSOCIATION INC

August, 2008

Dear Parents,

As you will recall last term the Uniform Shop Coordinator, Karen Pike, has announced her intention to resign from her role to return to work.  The P&C are still looking for a volunteer to take over the Uniform Shop operation.  If you are able to help in any way we would be keen to hear from you.

The uniform shop provides an important service to the School by providing quality items for students at reasonable prices.  Any profits made through the uniform shop go back into providing resources to the school through the P&C.

The main roles of the Uniform Shop Coordinator are as follows:

  • Opening the Uniform Shop and providing customer service
  • Coordinating volunteers working in the Uniform Shop
  • Daily monitoring of stock sales, including quarterly stocktakes
  • Banking of takings and completion of monthly financial statement
  • Recommendation of stock orders to the Uniform Shop Committee
  • Processing of payments to suppliers

A small honorarium is paid by the P&C to the Uniform Shop Coordinator to help with the cost associated with the travel to the bank, processing orders and payments, mailing etc.

Training will be available for the person taking on the Uniform Shop Coordinator role and the P&C will also fully support the Coordinator in successfully running the Uniform Shop.  Maybe you can see ways to improve the Uniform Shop, then this is your chance to do it.

If you are interested in taking on the role the Uniform Shop Coordinator please contact me to discuss further.  This is a critical role in the school community as nearly all of the uniform is now only supplied through the Uniform Shop.  The Uniform Shop cannot operate without the assistance of volunteers so please do not hesitate to contact me to find out more information.

Regards,

Allan White
P&C President
